Nine Years
Matilda Stenmark arrives in Hanoi in January 2017 with one suitcase, a new staff badge, and a two-year contract.
She expects Vietnam to be temporary.
It isn't.
Over the next nine years, Matilda rises from Field Coordinator to Country Director, building programmes, navigating crises, mentoring colleagues, arguing with donors, and slowly becoming part of a place she never intended to call home.
There are storms and difficult decisions.
A pandemic.
Promotions.
Departures.
Friendships that outlast job titles.
And an ordinary brass office key that gradually comes to mean far more than access to a building.
By 2024, Matilda is finally leading the organisation she helped build. The team is growing. A major five-year programme is underway. The future appears secure.
Then 2025 arrives.
A sudden stop-work order freezes the organisation's funding. Within months, Matilda's role changes from building the future to dismantling it.
Staff contracts end.
Desks disappear.
Programmes close.
And the woman who spent nine years learning how to lead must confront a different question:
How do you leave a place that became home when leaving was never part of the plan?
Warm, sharply observed, and threaded with humour, Nine Years is a novel about humanitarian work, leadership, friendship, belonging, and the strange grief of closing something you once worked so hard to build.
Above all, it is a story about what remains when the title is gone, the office is empty, and the last key has finally been handed back.
