Nihonjin is one of the most representative works on female agency and the struggle against a patriarchal social environment. Mediated by a male voice, we witness the experiences of two female characters: Kimie, a first-generation immigrant (issei), and Sumie, a second-generation immigrant (nisei), who contradict the stereotype of the docile, submissive nikkei wife or daughter. Nihonjin--for which Nakasato won the Benvir Literature Prize and the prestigious Jabuti Prize--recreates the Japanese migration to Brazil and the formation of a transnational cultural identity.
