Book Overview

Interactive illustrations encourage youngsters to look through the hole in each picture, then turn the page to see the difference between circles and squares, full and empty, fast and slow, nothing... This description may be from another edition of this product.

Very Clever!!!

This book is very clever. I love the ideas and themes throughout. My son has fun figuring the whole thing out and my wife enjoys reading it to him for the art driven worth.

overall, a great book

I found this book in the library and borrowed it for my 2 year old daughter primarily for the colorful illustration. She loves it. She will bring it to me daily, saying "Day!, book!", and we read it together. She likes the shapes and colors. Through her excitement for this book, she is learning her colors and shapes in a fun-filled way. As stated in other reviews, some of the opposites are a little unconventional for a 2 year old. For example, ABSTRACT/ CONCRETE. "Abstract" is an abstract painting, and "concrete" is a cow. My daughter will call out the shapes in the painting, and for the cow..."MOO!" She doesn't need to know the difference! I'm happy that she loves to read with me, and this book is perfect. Because she likes it. As for the CANDY/ PILLS comparison, we'll get to that when she can differentiate between the two. For now they are RED CIRCLES and CANDY (I keep medications out of her reach, so I'm not worried about her thinking medicine is candy). As she grows, we can explore the more complex opposites and discuss them. Check your library and, for free, you can see for yourself how your child will respond to it. After taking the book out twice in a row, I'm buying it.

Beautiful book with a few problems

This book is wonderful. I've had this book since my daughter was a little over one (she's almost two now) and she adores it. She is always bringing it to me to read to her and the pages are getting dogeared from her flipping through it by herself. There are a few problems (besides the obvious candy/pills comparison). The writing is little hard to read and some of the opposites aren't very clear (in the full/empty comparison, the "empty" glass isn't empty it still has liquid in it). However the drawings are very attractive and the use of circle cut-outs to connect the opposites is clever and well done. This book doesn't talk down to children and that is something that I appreciate. You might have to discuss with your child some of the opposites (such as the candy/pills, concrete/abstract, before/after) but this a book that is meant to encourage discussion about the world and how it works.

Is Candy/Medicine comparison good?

I haven't seen this book yet, but it strikes me that it mightbe a good thing for the candy & medicine comparisons to not bestrong--they are opposites, but little kids need grownups to help them know which is which.

Beautiful book -great for young kids

My 3 year old daughter loves this book. She reads it daily. The bold, vibant images are beautiful and the concepts it teaches diverse and interesting. The fact that the book is a little unconventional (one pair of opp's is abstract/concrete) is great IMHO. I wish this author had more books out there. I'd snap them up.
