Ah, and Venice, Los Angeles, California
I have been to all those places and recognized a lot of the scenery.
This movie was shown at the Venice Film Festival in 1961.
Now look again after reading:
“And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.” - Edgar Allan Poe's "Annabel Lee."
There is probably more to the movie than the surface we see. But holds its own without speculating on hidden meanings.
A sailor, Johnny Drake (a young Dennis Hopper), on leave, finds himself in the Blue Grotto, where he falls for a mysterious girl, Mora (Linda Lawson). She is sort of strange, and so is her background. She admits to being fishy. Johnny is warned that this is not a good relationship and that her previous two suitors mysteriously died. We get tales from her friends and relatives, as she is a foundling. We all know what foundling means.
Looks like Jonny is next, or is third time the charm? The film gets stranger and stranger as we get sucked into something psychological. You can kibitz, but I think it is too late.
Even after viewing and knowing the outcome, you will want to rewatch for the clues and nuances that you missed the first time around.
