In 1964, I was a U.S. Army Special Forces (SF) radio operator in South Vietnam. We were a small group of professional military advisers training, equipping and fighting alongside rural Vietnamese civilians turned soldiers to oppose the Viet Cong insurgents that controlled much of the countryside. America's war in Vietnam was just beginning. More than a decade later, I was a U.S. Navy radioman on Guam providing communications support to the U.S. Embassy in Saigon and the hastily assembled Navy Task Force 76 that was evacuating thousands of U.S. personnel and desperate Vietnamese citizens from Saigon. The fall of South Vietnam's capitol city was just a matter of time and not much of that. This is my insider's story about Army SF in the early days and my later Navy experience helping with the sad end to our efforts many years later.
