Honest, practical, and helpful, this book rings with authenticity through out. Clearly Dave Shive has been there himself. Gratefully he has paused on the otherside to reach back with this book and help those who are still trying to make their way. I read it several years ago and then bought 3 extra copies to have on hand in order to give to others who are struggling when the moment arises.

Light for the Dark Night of the Soul

Pastor, professor, and author, Dave Shive, has "been there, done that." When he writes about the "Night Shift" of life, he writes out of the Scriptures and out of his soul. As a counselor who specializes in ministering to ministers, "Night Shift" is the number one book that I recommend to hurting pastors and their families. But "Night Shift," because it is solidly biblical (it is an extended commentary on Psalm 40 applied to life), is not just for ministry families. Anyone who has ever been in the pits of life (and who hasn't?), anyone who has ever experienced the "dark night of the soul," can benefit from Shive's compelling narrative, accurate exegesis, and life-changing applications. Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," "Biblical Psychology," "Martin Luther's Pastoral Counseling," and the forthcoming "Sacred Companions: A History of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."

God is at work!

This book is a tremendous encouragement for the dedicated Christian who is presently struggling to understand why God seems to be so silent. Someone has said that "God whispers to us through our pleasure but shouts to us through our pain." Dave Shive's testimony is a living example of that truth. What a blessing to know that the Lord's most significant work in our lives is often disguised in trials and difficult circumstances. I read this book two years ago, but I wasn't experiencing a "night shift" of my own at the time. Now that I am, I have pulled it out again and have found comfort and understanding through its insights. All believers will endure their own "night shifts" at one time or another. When others offer no-so-helpful advice like "have more faith," this book will provide some clear perspective. Keep it nearby.

Practical help for those in the "pits" of life

This book will help you gain a better perspective on why you are going through a particularly difficult time in your life when you didn't expect to be. I left the mission field and am having a hard time finding work or a ministry that I like. I now realize that it is in the "pits" of life that the Lord does His greatest work in us, just like He did with Joseph, David, Jeremiah, John the Baptist, and others. The author draws heavily on the Psalms and the life of David to show that God is using these pit experiences to draw us closer to Him and to shape us for our next day shift assignment. Meanwhile, we are on the "Night Shift".
