Robin Gorman, a college student who drops out in the wake of the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, takes a job as a night janitor in County Hospital in a small California city to try to take stock and decide what he next wants to do. He finds himself drawn into the lives of the black janitors he works with and slowly his eyes are opened to an even deeper reality whites in America never encounter: life on the receiving end of a racially divided society. The camaraderie of the janitors in the hospital leads him to a close relationship with his supervisor Isaac Isaacson, but the relationship ultimately sends him reeling as he sees a dance of death engaged in by Isaac and a white deputy sheriff, whose racism is all but undisguised.
