Night of Conversion

A recollection of what led up to the moments of the conversion to Islam of Ok Waleed in the form of poetic writing. Writing about what led him to the night he became a Muslim while still in the United States military. Also telling the story of how he got the name وليد.

In Islam, being a convert means that a person has embraced the Islamic faith and has become a Muslim. A convert is someone who was not born into a Muslim family but has chosen to accept Islam as their religion. The process of converting to Islam usually involves reciting the Shahada, which is the declaration of faith that says, "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger." This declaration is considered to be the most important aspect of conversion, as it serves as the foundation of the Islamic faith.

Once a person has recited the Shahada, they are considered to be a Muslim and are expected to follow the basic tenets of Islam, such as performing the five daily prayers, fasting during the month of Ramadan, giving to charity, and making the pilgrimage to Mecca if possible. Converts may also choose to take on an Islamic name and may start practicing other aspects of the faith, such as wearing modest clothing and refraining from consuming alcohol or pork.

In Islam, conversion is a personal choice and is not forced upon anyone. However, those who do choose to convert are welcomed into the Muslim community and are considered to be brothers and sisters in faith. There are no separate or distinct sections within the Islamic faith for converts or born Muslims. All Muslims, regardless of their background, are considered equal in the eyes of Allah and are expected to follow the same basic principles and guidelines of the religion.

Religious freedom allows individuals to live their lives according to their own values and beliefs without fear of repression or persecution. It also promotes tolerance and respect for diversity, as people from different religious backgrounds are able to coexist peacefully and respectfully.
