An excellent explanation of where the food in the cities comes from

The topic of the book is so simple, yet most urban people, much less children, would never think about it. Large cities such as New York produce no food; all of it must be imported. Furthermore, a great deal of it must be fresh, transported in on a regular, if not daily basis. This book describes the fleets of ships, trucks and planes and the veritable army of people that labor through the night to make the daily food available for New York City. It is a story that children should learn, as it is so easy to forget that the food just does not magically appear, there is a complete sequence of events that must occur for it to be available for consumption. In this case, the story is told largely through pictures, as the fruit, flower, fish, meat and bakery markets are described.
