Night Lights: A Sukkot Story

By Barbara Diamond Goldin and Louise August

Book Overview

Sometimes it's okay to need a night light

It's fun for Daniel to build and decorate a sukkah with his family, and to eat dinner with friends and neighbors, but he's a little nervous about sleeping in the little hut without a real roof. It's harder this year, because Grandpa has a cold and won't be with Daniel. His older sister, Naomi, seems so brave and keeps teasing him about being scared of the dark, but when night falls and the wind howls, even Naomi is a little afraid. Maybe they both need a night light.

Luckily, they can see through the holes in the roof to the magnificent night sky....

Realistic sibling relationships and the inspiration provided by the bravery of long-ago ancestors combine in this much-loved story about Sukkot, a weeklong holiday commemorating the forty years Israelites wandered in the desert. New illustrations lend contemporary appeal and a kid-friendly afterword explains more about the holiday and how it applies to peoples' search for shelter today.

A special book for every Jewish child

Night Lights by Barbara Diamond Goldin tells the story of two Jewish children a boy Daniel and his older sister Naomi, and their night in the Sukkah, the hut their family has built for Sukkoth, the Jewish harvest festival. It tells of the Sukkoth meal, followed by the night of the two children in the hut, at first scared and scaring each other, they find comfort in each other and in the true message of Sukkoth and how G-D guided the Israelite Nation through the desert. A very special book for every Jewish child, with warm and loving illustrations.
