Reader's Review of "Night Butterfly"

I was quite pleased to have literally stumbled across Ms. McFall's article in "Threads" magazine last year. It is always a fine thing when an author's interests in some way echo your own. Based on that witty piece, I set out to acquire her book. As a veteran reader of "James Bond" and other "who-done-its" I found "Night Butterfly" to be rather refreshing in that her heroine, Nora James, a student in a foreign country, goofs up on occasion, can not easily slip into the indigenous population, does not have all the slick spy toys or a limitless supply of money at her fingertips to see her through the tough spots, and feels appropriately guilty over the small thefts necessary to stay alive. No neatly done, jet pack escapes here, Nora has to do it the hard way. Nora James finds herself caught between two powerful governments and the bad guys, she does not have all the facts at hand and does not come out of this story a decorated hero. In some respects Nora has to take her lumps in the end. In all, I found Ms. McFall's book to be a good entertaining read, worth re-reading on occasion, with a interesting, educating dollop of Japanese culture, both the new and the traditional as it's backdrop. I would happily recommend this title to friends, but I am loathe to loan out my only copy of the book.
