Nietzsche's Poems

Few philosophers wrote with the intensity, rhythm, and imaginative force of Friedrich Nietzsche. Long before many readers encountered his philosophical works, Nietzsche himself insisted that his thinking could not be separated from style, music, and poetic form. As the eminent interpreter of Nietzsche, Walter Kaufmann, once observed, Nietzsche was "one of the greatest masters of the German language and a writer whose philosophy is inseparable from his literary art." His aphorisms, hymns, songs, and dithyrambs belong to a single creative impulse: the attempt to think through the language of poetry.

This volume, Nietzsche's Poems, presents a carefully organized selection of Nietzsche's poetic writings, ranging from his early youthful compositions to the powerful and visionary Dionysian Dithyrambs, written near the end of his creative life. Taken together, these texts reveal a dimension of Nietzsche that is often overlooked: the lyrical voice that accompanies his philosophical project. The poems are not marginal ornaments to his thought; they are true laboratories of images, rhythms, and metaphors in which many of his most daring ideas first appear.

In these verses the reader encounters Nietzsche as seeker, satirist, solitary wanderer of mountains and forests, and ecstatic singer of Dionysian affirmation. The poems move between irony and prophecy, between playfulness and metaphysical intensity, revealing the emotional and imaginative forces that animate his philosophy.

This edition presents several distinctive features. The poems were selected and organized by the philosopher Alexandre H. Reis, whose aim was to provide readers with a coherent view of Nietzsche's poetic development. The translation by Gabriela Weisman and Alexandre H. Reis seeks to preserve, as faithfully as possible, the tone, rhythm, and lexical texture of Nietzsche's original German while rendering the poems in clear and resonant English. For this purpose, the translators worked from the critical edition Kritische Studienausgabe (KSA) of Nietzsche's works, edited by Giorgio Colli and Mazzino Montinari, widely recognized as the scholarly standard for Nietzsche studies.

A previous edition of this selection was published in bilingual format, presenting the poems in the original German alongside the English translation. The present edition preserves that same translation in its entirety but presents only the English text. By doing so, the volume becomes more compact and accessible, reaching a wider audience of readers interested in exploring the poetic dimension of Nietzsche's thought.

If Nietzsche once described the philosopher as a dancer, his poetry may be understood as the music to which that dancer moves. These poems reveal the inner rhythm of a thinker who sought not only to interpret existence, but to sing it.
