Nietzsche: Les textes essentiels [French]

An Annotated Nietzsche Reader, with Introduction and Glossary by Yannis Constantinid s, former student of the ENS (Ulm), agr g in philosophy, ATER at the University of Aix-Marseille. New. Due to be published in September 2001. The profound appeal of Nietzsche resists fad and fashion: he therefore appeared on the written section of the Agr gation (highest secondary- and tertiary-level teaching qualification) examination in philosophy in 1998 and 1999 and the first volume of his Collected Works has just been published in the prestigious collection Pl iade. This anthology attempts to present the coherence of Nietzsche's thought, despite the apparent disorganization of his body of work. This coherence is laid out according to a battery of questions corresponding to the six parts of the reader: - Neitzsche's constant emphasis of matters relating to written composition and style ("To read and write"), - his critical rereading of the great philosophers of the past in defence of a new understanding of philosophy ("Nietzsche and philosophy"), - his ongoing re-evaluation of moral values ("The physiology of morals"), - his highly original conception of politics ("Politics of the future"), - his appreciation of the need for man's liberation from the weight of heredity ("The paths of liberty"), - his aesthetic sense, so often misunderstood ("The physiology of art"). This balanced presentation of his thought allows the reader to grasp the profound originality of a thinker whose polemical aspects are not neglected either. Several Nietzsche readers exist. But, as opposed to the Hachette publication at hand, none of them offer commentary or a glossary. Only Georges Bataille's Memorandum (in Complete Works, Volume VI, Gallimard, 1973) offers some brief introductory notes to preface a selection of Nietzsche excerpts. Bataille, however, fails to make selection from any text prior to 1880, whereas we have here chosen to depict more precisely the ensemble of Nietzsche's work, favoring those texts published by the author himself.
