Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon (born July 19, 1970) is a prominent Scottish politician who made history as the first woman to serve as First Minister of Scotland and Leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), holding these positions from 2014 to 2023. Born in Ayrshire, Sturgeon grew up in Prestwick and Dreghorn, developing an early passion for books and reading. She graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of Glasgow in 1992 and later qualified as a solicitor.
Sturgeon joined the SNP at the age of 16, inspired by her opposition to Margaret Thatcher's policies. Her political career began in earnest when she was elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1999. Over the years, she served in various capacities within the SNP, including as Shadow Minister for Education, Health, and Justice. In 2004, she became Deputy Leader of the SNP, working closely with Alex Salmond.
