More than two centuries ago, after years of political stagnation and degeneration, the Republic of Earth was formed. This government aims to unite all of humanity under a single regime and, in turn, secure the admittance of humanity to the alien Federation that rules much of the galaxy. The only holdouts are the human colonists who live on a terraformed Mars. Although the Earth government claims that the existence of the United States ended with the formation of the world government on Mars there are American settlers who keep the traditions of the Republic alive. "Next Year in America" tells the stories of those who exist in this strange new world and of events that would change the galaxy forever. An Earth bureaucrat, learning to exist and thrive in a stifling and decaying society. An alien soldier, fighting to defend a Federation in which he doesn't fully believe. And a young man from Earth, a direct descendant of General Douglas MacArthur, who goes to Mars in search of freedom.
