This is a candid, sometimes shocking and always moving story of a family during the Holocaust. The author paints a vivid portrait of the Holocaust trauma and of her miraculous survival.
Alice tells a beautiful and sad story that is hard to get out of your mind. It is the story of a ordinary middle-upper class Jewish family and their struggles through World War Two and the Holocaust. Alice's survival is inspiring and beautiful but the losses that she, her family, and her friends suffer can only bring sadness to your heart. The writing is strong and it is a thought provoking book.
A unique holocaust story

The following was written by teacher, Wendy Jennius."Dear Ms. Birnhak:Your story was the most unique story of the Holocaust that I've read. The reason I say it is unique is because many stories I have read about the Holocaust begin just prior to the survivors' internment either in a ghetto or in a camp. Your story gives a history of your family. I related to your situation as a child growing up with a protective mother and a fun aunt. Although you gave the details of your subsequent internment, you didn't dwell on graphics. Thus, it seemed more believable simply because the reader becomes part of the family and must go through your experiences as one reads. I don't doubt the Holocaust for a second. But it is easy for one who didn't experience it to find it too fantastic to believe. Your story doesn't make it so."
