The Beothuk were the only permanent native people on the island until the early 16th century. As competition for resources grew, violence escalated. By the early 19th century, the indigenous population was decimated. Many explorers and adventurers have contributed to the rich history of Newfoundland and Labrador. Sir Humphrey Gilbert reclaimed the island for England in 1627. The first French colony in North America, Placentia Bay, was established in 1662. After World War II, the National Convention was formed to address the future of the country. It was made up of representatives from throughout the country. This was done to emphasize self-determination of the various European nationalities in the post-war era.
