The New Zealand Oxford Dictionary is the first large-scale English dictionary especially prepared for New Zealand users. It contains entries for over 100,000 general English words and meanings of the kind found in works such as The Concise Oxford Dictionary, along with some 10,000 distinctive New Zealandisms The New Zealand Oxford Dictionary, is an 'encyclopaedic' dictionary - that is, in addition to entries for words, compounds, idioms, and derivatives (providing information about the general vocabulary of English), it also includes more than 10,000 encyclopaedic entries (providing information about the world, especially its notable persons and places). The biographical entries not only give the important facts about a person's life and work, but also place their life and achievements in the context of their particular field or historical period. The place-name entries not only locate the place in question, but also provide detail about the character of the place and its historical, economic, or political importance.
