A hundred years after a nuclear war the descendants of the surviving Washington politicians have created an agrarian society of nobles and peasants. Fated to succeed his father as the ruler, twenty-year old Michael Kavanaugh fully believes the necessity of the harsh laws and the religion which justifies them. But when he falls in love with a peasant, he gradually begins to question both the laws and the religion. As relationships between the classes is punishable by death, Michael risks everything including both their lives by continuing thei affair.
