New music in beginner's textbooks

This paper focuses on the presence of new music in beginner's textbooks for recorder and transverse flute. It aims to show how current textbooks are structured with regard to new music. The paper is based on a comprehensive quantitative analysis of this area in all common textbooks published in the last 30 years. The aim is to highlight possible developments in the new music sector over the decades. A direct comparison of recorder and transverse flute also provides insight into whether there are any instrument-specific trends. It also shows whether the occurrence develops from volume 1 to volume 2 within the textbooks. In the following section, the textbooks with the highest occurrence of new music for recorder and transverse flute are examined in more detail. Examples will be given of how new music is integrated into these schools and how it finds its place alongside traditional pieces. In further detail, the thesis provides an overview of the sub-areas of new music resulting from the analysis. These will be examined and, in some cases, presented with further reading.
