New Directions: An Integrated Approach to Reading, Writing, and Critical Thinking

New Directions is a thematically based, integrated skills reader designed to bridge the gap between ESL and college content courses. By providing reading and writing assignments representative of real college classes, New Directions challenges students to expand their horizons. Through extended, integrated reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities, students learn to generate hypotheses, argue, analyze critically, and distinguish between different types of writing and purposes for reading. Moreover, New Directions helps students develop such crucial skills as the ability to identify a writer's point of view and tone, interpret a writer's meaning inferentially as well as literally, and discriminate between opinion and fact. The text also teaches students to detect fallacies in reasoning, to reach conclusions and judgments based on supportable criteria, and to propose new ideas.

A Wonderful Book and Great Seller!

This book is very good to teach international students different types of writing. Besides, it is a great source for self-education. In this book there are different sections with various topics for reading which are preceded and followed by a good variety of activities. I would recommend this book for those who either want to teach his/her students writing skills or needs some self-practice in writing.

Great for advanced EFL

This is the second year I've used this book with my 10th grade advanced English as a foreign language students here in Mexico. It's a great book for generating classroom discussion, essay assignments, cultural awareness, and critical thinking. The authentic readings are rich with important academic vocabulary, and the paraphrase exercises really help students learn to put ideas in their own words. I highly recommend this book for advanced, mature students at the high school or university level.
