Muriel's husband, John O'Connell, a lawyer, wishes to fulfill her dream but that dream is suddenly shattered when John is diagnosed with cancer. Her fragile state of mind has then reached the borderline of insanity. But her hope is restored when John's doctor suggests freezing his sperm before he starts chemotherapy. Eventually, her sanity is yanked away from her when the inevitable happens. John dies.
With the help of counseling and the support of her family, Muriel manages to regain her sanity, and the desire to have her diseased husband's child, but for years, thereafter, life continues to deal her one blow after another. After a while, she, somehow, begins to learn from her misfortune in order to pave her future. Life doesn't make it easy for Muriel.
