Latte Macchiato, the first Pig of Color to be elected Commandant of New Animal Farm, is term limited. Most animals believe that the coronation of his successor is all but a done deal. The Big Red Hen, who had deferred to Latte in previous elections, now feels entitled to assume his office. The campaign is thrown into turmoil when Pato Donaldo, an unusual looking swan who is mistaken for a duckling at hatching and sports a tuft of orange feathers atop his head, joins the race. El Pato gains enormous popularity among the common animals after he builds a replica of the legendary windmill of the original Animal Farm, thus creating much needed spade-ready jobs. The increasingly bitter campaign enthralls the animals. Commandant Latte decides that the farm cannot possibly survive without his leadership. Therefore, he cancels the election and declares himself Commandant in Perpetuity. The declaration only exacerbates the bitterness. The treacherous political battle devolves into an animal-eat-animal power struggle. If you can't beat them, eat them, emerges as the winning succession strategy.
