Young Wolf - Mathilda Zeller Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai'po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear--and even follow you home. These wholly original and shiver-inducing tales introduce readers to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge. Introduced and contextualized by bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones, these stories are a celebration of Indigenous peoples' survival and imagination, and a glorious reveling in all the things an ill-advised whistle might summon.
The first story was a little mysterious but not creepy. After that, the stories were just ok; gave me ‘what the f’ vibes. So far, the story that has given me pause has been ‘Wingless’ because…well, let’s just say that horror isn’t always just blood and gore. These stories are interesting because the beginning lets you think that nothing bad will happen but suddenly something ominous occurs. I stopped reading because I couldn’t stop thinking about another book but then I came right back as soon as I was finished reading that one. I think the story ‘Collections’ hit me the hardest because there’s this girl who feels she isn’t good at doing her job and she got yelled at by her boss when she dropped a tray of dishes and the worst part was, the whole restaurant heard. I can relate to this because when I was younger and I did something wrong, I always felt uncomfortable and disappointing when I was yelled at which is understandable when you’re a kid. On another note, her real name is Magis which also reminded me of ‘The Mummy’. I always thought that my favorite part of the book was the cover art or the plot twist but it’s the acknowledgment section. I always saw the acknowledgment section as a way of explaining to us how they came up with this idea for a book and just went along with it like it was their own version of art. I can’t help but appreciate that amount of creativity.
