I first encountered St. Alphonsus Liguori in a Catholic Novena book. I did not know much about him, except that he gave up a legal profession on a matter of conscience. I picked up this work, by chance, at a Catholic conference. The book delivered in providing detailed information on St. Alphonsus' life and ministry. As the title suggests, St. Alphonsus Liguori encountered numerous roadblocks in life. His father opposed his entrance into priestly life, and once he became a priest, he and his companion priests as missionaries amongst the common people in Italy suffered malnutrition, frostbite and other bodily ailments. There were many ecclesiastics who opposed his Congregation and attempted to see it shut down. It was a real battle to secure from the Pope of Rome formal recognition. Later, St. Alphonsus was by holy obedience led to becoming a bishop. He plead ill health, but when told it did not change the decision, he accepted the consecration and proceeded to aid the people to the best of his capacity.
