Why do People

So Often Fail

to Build Careers

They Really Love?

Based on 25 years of experience working with thousands of leaders - from early-career product managers to CEOs - Never Search Alone gives readers a time-tested, multi-step process (with exercises, tools, and templates) to find the right job now.

Three breakthrough ideas animate Never Search Alone:

1. Job Search Council - Because your emotional balance is the most important thing you need to manage in the job search, you need a support group of fellow job seekers that will help turn your insecurity and anxiety into hope, motivation, and accountability.

2. Candidate-Market Fit - You are the 'product' in a job search. Thus, before you begin networking and interviewing, you need to identify precisely what you want and what the market wants. This key step will help you figure out the intersection of your hopes, dreams, and market realities.

3. Four Legs to the Negotiations Stool - Never Search Alone shows you how to interview and then negotiate for the four key things that will set you up to

succeed in your new job: salary, budget, resources, and support.

To accelerate your career and make your dreams more achievable, Never Search Alone.

A game changer in my job search

A Storygraph reader criticizes this book as aimed at a narrow market — white collar, tech industry mid to senior level executives. I'm not sure I agree. At first pass I thought the process was very 'product management' focused, but what I was doing wasn't working, so I committed to trying this approach. This book, the process it outlines, my job search council and support materials provided (at no cost by a volunteer run organization) have been game changing in what has been the most terrifying job search I’ve undertaken. It's work. And it requires commitment, an open mind, and a willingness to ask for (and provide) help. I’m glad I found it. I hope this was my last job search. But I'm better prepared if there's another in my future. My favorite words: “Keep in mind that this job search playbook is like a cookbook. You don't get the nutritional value from reading. You get it from putting it into action.” “In high school and college, we get rewarded primarily for the grades we get on tests. In our formative years, we thus learn that asking for help is cheating.” “Let's be clear: recruiters search LinkedIn. They run filters. If you don't have the attributes they are looking for, then you won't get found. Like with consumer products, you never should lie. But you need to make sure that you position yourself to be found. Synchronize your skills and experience to the job you are looking for.” “We all tend to see ourselves through a distorted funhouse mirror…” “When you do get that job, of course, reach out and thank each person individually. You will bring enormous joy to them when you do. This literally sprinkles more happiness in the world.” “...this is a non-linear and iterative process.” “It almost doesn't matter if you don't have all the right data - don't make perfect the enemy of good.”
