Vivian LaRue, Nomi's Quest (Harper Festival, 2008) As I said in my review of The Creeping Danger, this is the Neopets fantasy trilogy for girls. There's still adventure and the like, but it's like the difference between hardboiled and cozy mysteries; this one lacks the same sense of immediate danger. That doesn't mean it's any less exciting; in fact, I liked this one better than I liked The Creeping Danger. Nomi is a Faerieland faerie, with all that entails, but she has a problem--she has some problems mastering magic. And with the big Faerieland festival coming up, she's got to find some way to come up with an act that will win her the Faerie Queen's peridot crown. But every other faerie apprentice is better at magic than she is. One day, she overhears two other apprentices talking about Edna, the Haunted Woods witch, and how she can help faeries increase their power. Problem solved! Except that everything Edna does comes with a price... LaRue has a better handle on plotting in this book than in The Creeping Danger, and there's actually a hint of subtlety to what's going on here, as opposed to the straightforwardness of the other book. It feels more accomplished, even in roughly the same real estate. It's good stuff, much better than I was expecting (even as a fan of Neopets). A must-read for Neopians, and might bring a few non-fans into the fold. *** ½

Vivian LaRue HarperCollins (2008) ISBN 9780061432149 Reviewed by Eric Zeda (age 10) for Reader Views (9/08) This book is the first story in "The Grey Faerie Chronicles" series. It is about a faerie named Nomi who wants to win the faerie festival. She writes a letter to a powerful faerie called Mayin to see if she can help her. Mayin says "yes" and Nomi starts training. Her training is going to take a long time so she asks Edna to help her boost her powers in the haunted woods. When she arrives at Edna's castle, Edna tells Nomi she needs special ingredients to become powerful. Nomi goes out to find the ingredients, but an evil neopet steals her memory and magic powers. Nomi finds two good neopets that want to help her get back home, but they need help. They go to the Brain Tree for help and he gives them directions. Nomi is happy she can find her way back home, but is sad because she does not have her magic powers. She hopes that when she returns home, someone will help her get her powers back. "Neopets: The Grey Faerie Chronicles: Nomi's Quest" is exciting and full of adventure. I am definitely going to read the next book in the series!
Rave from a Family of Fans

My whole family enjoyed this book. We are all fans of Neopets, so we especially enjoyed when the book included a detail we were familiar with from the site. My 5yo DD said when I was reading it was like "a movie in her head" because she knew exactly what everything looked like. My kids are 10, 7, 5, & 3. My 10yo DS is re-reading it on his own now. The 7yo tried to read it on her own, but it was a little too hard, she's going to try again during summer. We can't wait for the next installment.
