The London punk scene's explosive energy inspired Neneh Cherry's early career. She moved to the UK when she was only 15 years old, which would turn out to be crucial. In the middle of punk's rebellious energy, she found a feeling of belonging there. She had become friends with Tessa Pollitt, Viv Albertine, and Ari Up of the Slits years earlier when her stepfather, Don Cherry, traveled with the band and sometimes accompanied them on the road. The Slits welcomed Neneh with open arms, landing her in a Battersea squat with Ari when they invited Don on another tour with Prince Hammer and Creation Rebel. That place, with its colorful turmoil, seemed like home. Cherry's involvement in the punk movement and her participation in The Cherries furthered her musical journey. Her insatiable inventiveness drove her to work with a wide range of bands, such as the Slits, Float Up CP, New Age Steppers, and Rip Rig + Panic. Cherry also embraced another innovative aspect of the time: she experimented with DJing at the pirate radio station Dread Broadcasting Corporation, where she supported the early rap genre's sound.
