After inheriting an old house in Yorkshire, ex officer Guy Bennett is looking forward to the rural life. It's not long, however, before he is approached by another ex officer whom he believes is working for the British Government.

Intrigued, Guy is persuaded to carry out a number of 'black operation' - off the books - missions, in the belief that the targets are guilty but who would walk free without his 'intervention'.
