Negocios Blancos en la cuerda floja / White Businesses on the Tightrope [Spanish]

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

"THE TAPES REVEALED A CALM, EASYGOING SAMMY, WHO, LAUGHING, TOLD THE COLOMBIAN THAT EVERYTHING WOULD BE FINE, EVEN THOUGH HE WAS SPEAKING FROM THE HOTEL ROOM WHERE HE WAS HOLED UP WITH DEA AGENTS."

In the 1990s, Horacio, a Colombian; Sammy, a Dominican; and Otoniel, from Guatemala, met in a New York prison, all three arrested on drug trafficking charges. A few years later, upon being released, they partnered to ship cocaine from Central America to the Big Apple. Sammy, Horacio, and the DEA claimed that Guatemalan Jorge Mario was also involved. To this day, he denies it -- yet he has spent 17 years imprisoned (and remains the only one still behind bars) because--due to poor legal advice--he failed to follow the rules of the U.S. judicial system that help defendants avoid lengthy sentences.

Rather than telling a typical drug trafficking story, the author sought to reveal what remains unseen--what happens beyond journalistic reporting--and the tangled dynamics between characters who, after risking everything, end up worse than they began. Desperate to save themselves, they turn on anyone necessary--without hesitation--and regain their freedom despite the charges against them.

This is a journalistic and literary effort to recount a true case using certain techniques of fiction--but only techniques, for in these situations, reality far surpasses imagination.
