Necrotizing otitis externa

Necrotizing otitis externa (NEO) is an aggressive otological infection originating in the tympanic bone. The objectives of this study are to describe the bacteriological profile of a series of N.E.O.s, and to assess the involvement of multi-resistant germs. A retrospective descriptive study was carried out in the ENT department of La Rabta Hospital, from January 2020 to June 2023, on 32 cases of OEN with at least one positive bacteriological sample and an available antibiotic susceptibility test. The clinical presentation corresponded to the classic picture of OEN. The most frequently isolated germs were: Pseudomonas aeruginosa(51.9%), Staphylococcus aureus(17.3%).Other germs were also observed. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was resistant to ciprofloxacin in 5% of cases, and to ceftazidime in 5%. Of the 9 positive cultures of staphylococcus aureus, 3 were resistant to methicillin. Appropriate treatment of simple forms of otitis externa, early diagnosis of OEN and systematic bacteriological documentation are the key to combating antibiotic resistance
