At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan, Jim Buck is a washed up movie cowboy who is nearly out of money and drinks heavily. The day after the attack, he and his stuntman friend try to enlist, and Buck is rejected due to injuries sustained doing his own stunts in movies. For the next two years he makes training films for the war effort. He loses this job due to his drinking. His only recourse is to retreat to his Arizona cattle ranch to regain his dignity and purpose. He finds that his ranch manager has been embezzling money, and there is a campaign through the rustling of his stock and the actions of a devious real estate agent to drive him off his ranch. He fights off the need for alcohol and finds a new dedication to life as he fights off the rustlers and the people trying to take his land from him.
