This book is a lyrical appreciation of West coast nature by the brilliarit naturalist Philip Croft. Set in a diary form, it is based on Croft's regular daily walk through his own neighbourhood in West Vancouver, into the forest and down to the beach. Illustrated by the author with sketches and water colour paintings, the book is a beautifully articulate, humourous and philosophical tribute to the west coast's seasons. Nature Diary of a Quiet Pedestrian is delightful, educational and a very pleasant read.
I found this book originally in an online vintage shop and went looking for a less expensive copy. I started with my library only to find not a single library in my state has it! Having only seen one page of the writing and several of the illustrations, I found it here for such a good price, I went for it!
The book is beautiful. If you like Mary Oliver or Robin Wall Kimmerer, this may be up your alley. While I wouldn't call Mr. Croft's writing as 'spiritual', he does have such a reverence and wonderful curiosity. I believe much of what he knew of the natural world he studied on his own. All of the watercolors and sketches are gorgeous and his own. What I also enjoy is that they directly have to do with the ongoing narration, so we get to see what Mr. Croft seeing. It's a steady journey through the seasons that has its comedic moments and interesting reflections. What really brings it all together is his interest, knowledge and passion for things many of us walk by every day without even taking notice.
