Wow - Great Case Study in Cross-Cultural Missions

This book is itself a "gem" in the crown of stories about 20th century missions in North America. With vivid detail, and a straightforward honesty, Klumpenhower gives an account of his and his family's role in sharing their Christian faith and ministering amongst the Navajo of the south-west United States. While the author's intent is to tell the story so as to reinvigorate the Christian Church's commitment to Native Missions, he also provides an apt case study in missiology. The reader discovers the issues of indigenous leadership, enculturation, and syncretism must be faced directly by those engaging in cross-cultural missions. Perhaps the greatest strength of the book is the author's willingness to share how his personal and family life was integrated into their lives as missionaries. He even includes his sons' recollections, which add to the honest and vivid nature of the book. The book is simply a great read for a wide readership - both the young and the learned will profit from this wonderful gem of a story. Rev. Kenneth M. Vander Horst
