Nathaniel Pybus is a 16th Century time traveller and adventurer. The Great Fire (of London) sees the Howarth children - Tristram, Calista and Phillip - befriending Nathaniel, a mysterious old man residing in the attic of their quaint, English country cottage.Inquisitive young minds, the three children are given a first person view into historic events through time accompanied by Nathaniel; a man for whom the years have provided a great deal of adventures. In this, the first adventure, they experience life on the streets during the year 1666. As what became known as 'The Great Fire' gradually takes a firm hold on the landscape of Old London Town the children and Nathaniel are thrust into a world of intrigue and suspicion from the locals and it becomes a desperate fight to get back to their own time and their village lifestyle.The Great Fire was not their only consideration - as the dangerous conflagration, considered by some as an act of terrorism, King Charles II had inherited a disillusioned population coming to terms with a new monarch, the son of a king very recently executed by parliament. Enemy agents from Holland and Spain, even his courtiers were not beyond suspicion of a possible conspiracy to see him follow in the footsteps of his father to the chopping block. For the children, oddly attired and not altogether acquainted with the old ways, they became prime targets when a vigilante mob captures them, threatening to hand them all over to the militia and the King's men.A time very different to their own the reader is invited into an England of the mid17th century and the opportunity in learning about the lives of ordinary folk, what really happened that fateful night when The Great Fire began and how everyone was under suspicion.The Nathaniel Pybus Adventures Series is intended to introduce children from 8-12 to a world of history through various major events in English, British and World history that changed the face of a country and its population forever over the last 500 years.
