Fiction That Forces Us to Remember

Natchez Burning is not the kind of novel I usually reach for. I’m rarely drawn to thrillers or sprawling mysteries, yet Greg Iles pulled me in immediately and held my attention with remarkable force. What he’s crafted is more than a gripping narrative, it’s a deeply human, fictionalized doorway into the horrific violence of the Jim Crow South and the terror wrought by the KKK during the civil rights era. For anyone unfamiliar with this period, the novel becomes both story and education. Iles handles brutally difficult history with care, grounding it in characters who feel painfully real and reminding us that these events aren’t distant, they reverberate through our culture even now. Natchez Burning is compelling, unsettling, and profoundly important. It asks us to look back honestly, to sit with discomfort, and to remember what must never be forgotten. I’m grateful I read it.
