NASA's Artemis 1 mission to the Moon: What to expect and why it matters from the launch

NASA's Artemis program to send men back to the moon is presently slated to launch Artemis 1, the first unmanned test mission, from Pad 39B of the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral on Monday (Aug. 29).

NASA has emphasized numerous times that Artemis 1 is fundamentally a test flight. It is both the first deep-space voyage for the new Orion spacecraft and the maiden flight of the agency's new megarocket, the towering Space Launch System (SLS). During the launch countdown, there can be technical issues that demand a delay.Jim Free, NASA's assistant administrator for exploration systems development, stated at a news conference on August 22 that "the test fight itself bears inherent danger." This is a new rocket's and spacecraft's inaugural flight.
