The rules were conceived with 1:72 scale figures in mind, but could be used or adapted for other scales. They are suitable for engagements involving between 50 or so units up to several hundred. There are short introductory sections on: Choosing paints and applying them Choosing the most appropriate model figures Recording unit strengths for a battle scenario and tracking its progress (record sheet templates included) Applying the rules There is also a limited number of photos showing figures in various formations. One demonstrating how figures with originally identical poses can be adapted to vary the poses. Other suggestions are made as to how figures may be enhanced, for example, by replacing stocky lances of the original models with more realistic-looking ones fashioned out of needles . These might inspire wargamers to take up the art of model figure painting if they haven't yet done so, or, if they already have, to keep up the good work or improve on my efforts.... The rules proper include sections on troop quality, movement, firing and morale Many useful tables are provided to determine: Movement for infantry and cavalry Morale Overcoming defences such as walls Hit probabilities for musket, rifle, round shot, canister and howitzer fire at various ranges and target troop densities Capacity of troops to advance, hold position, retreat or surrender Hand-to-hand combat outcomes between troops of varying strength and quality. Suggestions are made around ways to simplify complex calculations, for example, of casualties. Wargamers are free to pick and mix whatever levels of complexity suit their chosen scenarios, the general principle being that the smaller the number of troops, the greater the number of levels. On request, the author will be happy to send for a small fee an editable file to allow wargamers to enter their own values to the tables.
