This book was written by Count Phillppe-Paul De Segur - a general on Napolean's staff in the campaign into Russia. Published in France in 1824, only translated to English in 1950s. Segur was loyal to Bonapartebut and on the scene for what he saw as critical mistakes during the campaign. I have always been amazed at the day-to-day dairies and letters of 16th to19th Century people involved in bitter, brutal, ongoing strife - yet still managing to spend time recording their experiences and hopes. This book fits that bill 100%. Anyone who enjoyed Christopher Hibbert's "The Great Mutiny India 1857" can expect a great read.
