The membrane-based separation technology offers innovative possibilities for separating gaseous or liquid mixtures. Compared to conventional distillation systems, membrane devices are much smaller and the processes can be carried out at lower temperatures. Under certain conditions, combinations of distillation and membrane units, so-called hybrid processes, have become established. When separating olefin / paraffin mixtures, it was estimated that membrane-based hybrid processes could save around 40-50% of production costs. The nanocomposite membranes are new additions to efforts to improve gas separation. In this category, zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), a subfamily of organometallic frameworks (MOFs), ZIFs have the adjustable pore size and chemical functionality of classic MOFs. In this book, all aspects of membrane production, nanocomposite membranes and characterization techniques were explained.
