The concept of tourism as we see today is considered as a new phenomenon but in real
sense of the word this concept is as old as early civilization. Tourism today is becoming
one of the most flourishing industries in the world. It is poised to become the major
global industry by the end of the century as it offers opportunities for economic, cultural
and political exchanges at all leaves. Travel and tourism is one of the best vocational
course options available in view of the changing time and market requirements. It is also
a labour intensive industry and provides high growth career prospects for specialists.
Tourism is emerging as one of the biggest employers than in other economic sector. After
petroleum, tourism at present is the second largest and the fastest growing industries in
the world. It is anticipated that by 2020, tourism is poised to be single most important
influence on global trade and commerce. 1
The emergence of tourism is an important instrument for human development including
employment generation, poverty elevation, environmental regeneration apart from
promoting social integration and international understanding also necessitates the
enunciation of a pragmatic tourism plan. Looking at the context of India, we have not
been able to exploit the potential fully as our international FTA share of the global
tourism market is just a mere 0.64 compared to tiny countries such as Singapore and
Malaysia accounting for 1.4% and 2.5% 2 of the global tourist traffic only. One reason of
our dismal performance on this front is due to the lack of proper infrastructure,
Advertisement, road and transport and also due to the presence of militants/insurgency
movements.
