In this study, Andreas Heuer examines modern historical thought in Germany, or rather, the German-speaking world, from the beginning of the 19th to the second half of the 20th century, focusing on five protagonists who clearly illustrate this thought and its critique: Hegel, Droysen, Troeltsch, Lowith, and Leo Strauss. Hegel's conception of world history, Droysen's methodological foundation of history as a science, Troeltsch's insightful perspective on the challenges of this thought, Lowith's inherent critique of historicism, and Leo Strauss's fundamental critique of historical thought are presented. This is followed by reflections on the continuities of historicism up to the present day, which are placed in the context of an opening of historical thought to non-Western history. Finally, the fundamental problems of historical thought in the tension between relativization and the search for universal norms are discussed.
