Myths & Legends of Babylonia & Assyria

By Lewis 1874-1955 Spence

In the shadowed temples of ancient Mesopotamia, priests whispered to gods whose names have echoed down the millennia. Here, amidst the fertile valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates, the boundaries between myth and history blur, and the stories of Sumerian gods, legendary kings, and primordial chaos pulse with life. This sweeping exploration draws readers deep into the enigmatic world of Babylonian and Assyrian mythology, where the epic of Gilgamesh stands as both a poetic triumph and a window onto the beliefs that shaped early civilisations. The narrative unfolds with a scholar's care and a storyteller's touch, illuminating the origins of creation, the struggles of mortals and immortals, and the intricate rituals that bound the people of the ancient Near East to their deities. What sets this work apart is its deft interweaving of mythological stories with the archaeological and historical context of ancient Mesopotamia, offering not only the tales themselves but also an understanding of how these legends informed the spiritual and social lives of their tellers. The enduring fascination of these myths lies in their complexity: gods who love and rage, heroes who defy fate, and a world where the supernatural is never far from the everyday. For those captivated by ancient history books, the origins of Mesopotamian religion, or the enduring allure of early civilisations, this edition provides a rare, immersive experience.
