More than 30 years have passed since editor Edward Heenan gathered these essays from the 1960s and early 1970s. As a contributor, I still find Heenan's collection of voices (the glorious Timothy Leary, the gay genius Allen Ginsberg) to be extremely interesting and informative about how magic and mystery and ancient religion shape our world. This is Halloween 2004, a long time after--as a very young writer--I was included in this collection. That Heenan chose my interview with Anton LaVey, founding High Priest of the Church of Satan, helped make that interview legendary in witchcraft, Wiccan, and Satanic culture--particularly with the Church of Satan which is alive and ongoing into the future. Heenan thus gave a boost to my 1972 book, POPULAR WITCHCRAFT: STRAIGHT FROM THE WITCH'S MOUTH, which featured my interview with the grand gentleman LaVey. POPULAR WITCHCRAFT was the first book on homosexuality, gender, and the Holocaust of the Inquisition that demonized women's sexuality and gay sexuality. Re-written for the 21st century, POPULAR WITCHCRAFT (second edition, Halloween 2004, University of Wisconsin Press) rather much completes the circle. That is simply a bit of my personal reflection on the history of this anthology whose contents remain relative today. Heenan did what good anthologists do: he gathered together an interesting collection of people, had them rather much "sit in a circle around a campfire," and speak their stories.
