Highly recommended cozy

I'm a fan of the cozy mystery genre and love to read books set in the South. Mystery at Clareton Manor provides a strong female sleuth (Molly May, a retired SC detective) who lets no detail go unnoticed and who, to me, represents the many smart, southern women I know who have rejected the "big-hair" ideal of decades gone by. Kathleen Newberg seems to understand the "new" South and never once turns to old South stereotypes for her characters, especially the black ones. How refreshing! Her descriptions are vivid and real, and they conjure clear images for me. The dialog is right on, true to the small-town South. Very many of the guests at Clareton Manor had a motive to kill Ruger, and I found the sorting through of clues and personalities to be very genuine and compelling. When I learned who killed Ruger, I was genuinely surprised. When I learned why, I was doubly surprised. The story is tight, the reading swift, and the enjoyment complete! Recommended.

Loved Clareton Manor

It's hard to find a good cozy to curl up with these days. But here's one, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The characters are diverse, and all have a motive for the murder at the Manor, the conversation is delightful, and the Manor and its surroundings are so pleasing you feel right at home. But, hey, it's the plot and the retired detective Molly May that count. Molly is endearing, but definitely sharp, and surprise, surpise, surprise, the ending is just great!
