My Very First Day of School: A Rhyming Read-Aloud About Starting Kindergarten
The backpack is new. The backpack is blue. The backpack is waiting by the door.
And Wren has never gone to school before.
There are five sleeps to pack it. Three sleeps for the squeaky new shoes. One sleep that stubbornly refuses to turn into any sleeping at all. And then, far too fast, a morning with toast that will not go down, and a gate that is taller than a garden gate and louder than a hundred bees.
Wren stops. Wren's shoes stop. Nothing on earth is going to make them start again.
Until a grown-up crouches down and says the one thing small enough for a small person to actually hold:
"You don't have to do the whole thing. Just the next small bit."
One breath. One shoe. One step. That, it turns out, is all it ever was.
A bouncy rhyming read-aloud about the biggest day a little person ever has.Built to be read out loud. Bouncy, performable verse with a countdown that tightens page by page, and a refrain your child will be saying with you by the third read. For the wobble, not just the day. Perfect for the summer before school starts, the night before, and the walk to the gate itself. One sentence they can keep. The whole book hands your child a tool small enough to carry into every scary first that comes after this one.Do not close it early. Because tomorrow it is Pocket's turn, and Pocket has never been on the class shelf before. The last page is the one that gets the grown-ups.Ages 4-8. Warm, hand-painted illustrations on every spread, with plenty of room to point and talk.
