Two girls, one white and one black, meet in 1961 and become friends. Terri, the white girl, knows nothing of racism and prejudice. Emma, the black girl, knows nothing but having been born in racially torn Mississippi. Emma, now living in Portland, Oregon where the girls meet in high school, loses contact with her family who are still living in Mississippi so the girls decide to go to Emma's home town to find her family. Thus begins the story of 'My Summer with Emma'.
