Book Overview
My Purple Poetry: Thoughts on My Purple World is an intimate, unconventional, and deeply personal collection of poetry that takes readers on a journey through grief, love, loss, identity, struggle, humor, healing, and hope.
David Spangle writes openly about the experiences that have shaped his life from the devastating loss of someone he loved deeply to childhood memories, family relationships, emotional struggles, depression, therapy, and the search for happiness. His poems move freely between sadness and laughter, vulnerability and irreverence, personal memories and wider reflections on society.
Throughout the collection, David explores subjects including love and control, grief, social media, diversity, poverty and prosperity, identity, politics, relationships, mental health, aging, crime, gratitude, and the challenges of finding meaning in an imperfect world.
What makes the collection distinctive is its "purple" world a recurring imaginative language and personal perspective through which David transforms difficult experiences into something expressive, humorous, hopeful, and ultimately uplifting.
This is poetry that does not shy away from life's darker moments. It acknowledges pain while continuing to look for beauty, connection, friendship, love, and reasons to keep moving forward.
As the foreword describes it, the reader travels through a world of "imagination and reality," moving between beauty and tragedy, joy and sadness, while ultimately arriving somewhere positive and uplifting
