"My Papa" is a story cowritten by a mother and 10 year old son, Kelson, who shares about his admiration and love for his grandfather. As seen through Kelson's eyes, Papa is smart, brave, funny, kind and capable of fixing and doing anything. Papa provides the guidance for Kelson to navigate this world, offering him his acquired wisdom, experiences and support as Kelson's curiosity for life and independence grows. The focus of this story is to highlight the importance of the role that grandfathers play in nurturing and stabilizing families, and how fundamental their bond is in the development of a child's life. Furthermore, as part of the black community, Papa and Kelson represent a distinct relationship that portrays a source of social support and transmits teachings on the enduring legacy of Black culture and heritage. As Kelson spends time with his grandfather each summer, he reflects on his favorite moments with Papa and the value that Papa provides during those special moments.
