John opened his mouth but quickly shut it again after realising that he had no idea what he intended to say.

A crushed, disfigured face didn't make him feel welcome. He appeared to have all of his limbs, ruling out the possibility of a severed spine. When he discovered firm, unharmed flesh where the blood had once poured, he was overcome with overwhelming relief.

But the scene he was presented with pulled the rug out from under him, and he had to accept (if a little reluctantly) that Mycroft had been correct when he had cautioned him that it might be a shock.
